Alt text is an essential principle of web accessibility and should be added to all images wherever possible. It describes the appearance, or function, of an image on a webpage, to be read aloud by screen readers, or is displayed in place of an image if it fails to load. Its best format is that which is sufficiently accurate and descriptive.
Alternative text can be typed by the uploader, or, in Microsoft Word, it is automatically generated when you import an image.
